What would Saltmarket look like in 2060?

Saltmarket Street re-imagined by Vanesa Umurska

Imagine If... Saltmarket Street evolved…

The artwork displays the tenement typology as a physical timeline and how a simple elevation could explicitly depict occupants’ social status, way of living and mindset of the certain historical period. The concept of the artwork revolves around the importance of restoring and adapting buildings to the current lifestyle in order to continue the life of the most iconic housing typology in Glasgow.

Looking at the future image for 2060 you can see the formation of collective communities in neighbourhoods, green living strategies, and the supply of organic food from local farmers. The window signs bring attention to delicate matters such as 'Equality,' 'Green life strategies,' 'Stay optimistic,' 'Community,' and 'Make love, not war.' In the future image, these are not just unachievable notions but realised and safeguarded principles. Green lifestyle techniques aren't just for show; they're also required by construction codes. To demonstrate that green roofs are being used to take advantage of their ability to create a habitat for a variety of species, which is beneficial to ecosystems in the midst of a historically industrial city. Terraces with green façade engage with the idea of having a small gathering with a friend or perhaps a place of relaxation, all while reinforcing the impression that nature does not only include parks. There is an element of a wall showcasing people's handprints to further the ideas of the necessity of the community and society operating as one. The ground-floor businesses emphasise the need for organic natural food produced locally in Glasgow, tying up with small-business development initiatives such as local farms.
